Long-Tail Keyword Strategy for SEO, AEO, & GEO

Long-tail keywords have always been a core component of SEO strategy. But are they as important for answer engine optimization (AEO) and generative engine optimization (GEO)? Not only are they as important, but researching & leveraging these specific keywords may be more critical than ever if you want to be seen by customers & patients.

Using Long-Tail Keywords for SEO, AEO, & GEO

What Are Long-Tail Keywords?

Keywords can be broken down into three categories based on their length and specificity:

  • Short-tail: Also called head terms, these keywords are very broad and tend to only be 1-2 words.
    • Example: “chiropractor”
  • Mid-tail: Body terms are around 2-3 words and add useful context
    • Example: “local pediatric chiropractor,” “chiropractor near me”
  • Long-tail: Longer (4+ words) and structured more like a specific question
    • Example: “when should i see a chiropractor,” “can a chiropractor help with neck pain”

There’s a risk and reward to using long-tail keywords as part of your strategy. Because the query is specific, you’ll have a better chance of ranking for people searching for that very particular thing. This may make long-tail keywords less ideal if you want to rank broadly, however. The best compromise? Creating an SEO keyword strategy that makes good use of all three kinds of keywords.

What Are AEO & GEO?

While SEO is still the gold standard of getting your website to rank in Google Search and other search engines, AEO and GEO have emerged as important expansions of that formula.

AEO relates to AI tools in search engines that provide fast answers to specific questions. A prime example is Google’s AI Overviews. Content that is optimized for an answer engine like this allows your website to be cited as a source of information, which results in top-of-page visibility and makes your website the logical next step for additional information. AEO also has to do with ranking for voice search, which includes Siri, Google Assistant, and so on.

GEO is a similar concept, but the idea is that your content is being optimized to be cited by a generative AI like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. The idea would be that your content flows in such a way that it can be used by an LLM to create an answer to a question. While the responses these models offer should, of course, be scrutinized, the fact that your content is seen as an authority will boost confidence in your business with the user.

Are Long-Tail Keywords Important for AEO & GEO?

So where do long-tail keywords come in? The fact is that because AEO and GEO are reliant on answering questions, keywords that essentially are the kinds of questions you’d expect customers or patients to ask are quite important. If, say, you have patients who routinely ask about the potential side effects of chiropractic adjustments, you could create content around those kinds of queries, provide the answer, and position yourself as a trusted source on the subject.

While tools like Google Keyword Planner are helpful for short- and mid-tail keyword strategy—and these keywords are important for SEO, AEO, and GEO—they can be less effective for pulling out long-tail keywords. You can use these tools to your advantage as you work toward creating content by searching for specific questions on Google, seeing what sources are cited by the AI Overview, and taking note of the related questions that users asked. Using the information gained here can help you determine which long-tail keywords to target and how to structure your content. By focusing on answering real questions asked by potential visitors and customers, you can become an authority and boost your visibility.

Optimize Your Website for SEO, AEO, & GEO

Many of the same approaches you’d take to ensure that your content is visible via answer engines and generative engines are in tune with the same fundamentals of SEO. On top of informative content with relevant short-, mid-, and long-tail keywords, you can increase your chances of ranking well by establishing E-E-A-T, improving your website on both the front and back end, and following best practices. A comprehensive SEO strategy can be foundational to growing your business, and Page One Digital can help you start from a place of strength. Contact us for a free evaluation!
